On this profoundly significant day in our history, we unite as one people to honor the indomitable spirit of our forebears—the courageous individuals who shattered their chains, dreamed of freedom, and ignited a transformative flame. Today, we celebrate with joyous voices,” the prime minister’s message read in part. “We pay tribute to Sam Sharpe, whose ultimate sacrifice sparked a revolution. His powerful words to the British Parliament still resonate: ‘I would rather die upon yonder gallows than live in slavery.’
Highlighting the necessity of maintaining the progress achieved since the abolition of slavery, Holness called upon Jamaicans to collaborate in continuing to build the nation.
“We honor the countless souls who labored, endured, and longed for the dawn of liberty. Their legacy pulses through our veins, compelling us to create a Jamaica where justice flows like our rivers, and equality flourishes like our tropical flowers. We cannot afford to halt our progress now,” he emphasized.
The Legacy of Jamaica’s National Heroes
Jamaica’s National Heroes—Hon. Marcus Garvey, Nanny, Paul Bogle, Sam Sharpe, Sir Alexander Bustamante, Hon. Norman Manley, and George William Gordon—fought tirelessly against foreign domination, both economic and otherwise.
